The Gateway of India is well-known and is a must-visit place if you are on a trip to Mumbai. You'll be amazed to know that this year this historical monument has completed 100 years. This grand monument, which opened to the general public on 4 December 1924, is called the Gateway of India.

Just imagine, the year is 1911 and British King George V and Queen Mary are about to set foot on Indian soil for the first time. To welcome them, a grand monument is being built at Apollo Bunder in Mumbai - Gateway of India. Designed by famous architect George Wittet, this monument has become a symbol of Mumbai today and is a center of attraction for every tourist.

When it was decided that British Emperor George V and Queen Mary would visit India, a plan was made to build a grand monument to welcome them. To mark this historic event, the construction of a stunning structure was started in Mumbai, which later came to be known as the Gateway of India. Sir George Cinham, the then Governor of Bombay, laid the foundation stone of this grand monument on March 31, 1911.

However, due to delayed construction work, when the Emperor and Empress arrived in Mumbai on December 2, 1911, the Gateway of India was incomplete. Yet this challenge proved to be a brilliant solution that made the reception worth remembering. A massive and magnificent cardboard gate he designed was a replica of the Gateway of India. It was a temporary construction but provided a fitting welcome to the Emperor and Empress of Mumbai.

The Gateway of India is the historical monument in the metropolis of Mumbai, within the country called India. Constructions in the early years of the 20th century and around Rs 21 lac were incurred on its making. This highly impressive building has been elaborated with yellow basalt and concrete. Its leading dome was wide as long as 15 meters and beautiful latticework had been ordered to Gwalior for it.

The Gateway of India was designed in the Indo-Saracenic style by a British architect. The story of its building is engraved on both sides of this building. After being built, it was used to welcome British officers who came to India, hence the name 'Gateway of India'. The construction of the Gateway of India is said to mark the end of British rule in India. Today, this is the most famous place among the tourists in Mumbai. Every year, millions of tourists come to visit.

Standing at the Gateway of India, the Arabian Sea sprawls in front of you, and if one focuses on the middle distance, way further in the distance rises the ornate, stately elegance of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, while pigeons circle around above and the seas break softly against the seawall. This is the place where the history and modernity of India meet together. As it has free entry, it does not cost anyone to come and enjoy this beautiful view.
