Now it will be opened to the public on January 12.
According to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the much-awaited Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) is all set to open to the public on January 12, 2024. According to recent reports, the Chief Minister confirmed the development on December 31, 2023, and also informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the mega project.
However, it is yet to be officially announced. Let us tell you that MTHL will be the longest sea bridge in India, whose length will be 21.8 km. Come, let us know about it.
The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link will be named after former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and will be called Atal Setu. The project was expected to be inaugurated on December 25, 2023, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Shri Vajpayee, but it could not happen due to the work not being completed on time.
Construction of this project first started in 2018 and has missed the timeline twice so far. It was to be completed by 2022 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The MTHL will start on the freeway from Sewri in South Mumbai, cross the Thane Creek and end at Chirle on the outskirts of Navi Mumbai. The bridge, spanning about 22 km with a length of over 16.5 km over the sea, is the country's longest bridge. There is going to be a big sea bridge.
The project is also important given the plans for Navi Mumbai Airport to have a direct connector through MTHL in the future. Additionally, the government is also planning to connect the Mumbai-Pune Expressway to MTHL to further reduce travel time. Because of this, it will now take only 35-40 minutes to travel from South Mumbai to Navi Mumbai instead of 2 hours.
The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is expected to have a daily traffic of over 70,000 vehicles with a speed limit of 100 kmph. Built for Rs 17,843 crore, this 6-lane expressway will also be equipped with AI cameras to detect vehicle faults and alert the control room.
