Meta Temporarily Bans AI Characters for Teen Users Across Platforms

The popular social media company Meta announced on Friday that it is temporarily suspending the use of its AI characters for teens across all its platforms. The company includes popular social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook. The company has banned the use of AI characters for users who are considered teens based on their birthdays.

Meta clarified that it is a temporary ban. According to the company, teens will no longer be able to use Meta's "custom-built AI characters," which are chatbots with distinct personalities. However, they will still be able to use the standard Meta AI Assistant, but it will be subject to stricter age-based security measures. This rule also applies to users who identify as adults but Meta's age prediction technology suspects they are actually teenagers.

The company stated that it is developing an updated experience that will allow parents to see what their children are interacting with AI chatbots. "In the coming weeks, teens will no longer be able to use AI characters on our apps until the updated experience is ready," Meta said in a blog post. "When we return, parents will have enhanced parental controls to monitor their children's AI experiences."
