The Gateway of India is well-known and is a must-visit place if you are on a trip to Mumbai. You'll be amazed to know that this year this historical monument has completed 100 years. This grand monument, which opened to the general public on 4 December 1924, is called the Gateway of India.

Just imagine, the year is 1911 and British King George V and Queen Mary are about to set foot on Indian soil for the first time. To welcome them, a grand monument is being built at Apollo Bunder in Mumbai - Gateway of India. Designed by famous architect George Wittet, this monument has become a symbol of Mumbai today and is a center of attraction for every tourist.

When it was decided that British Emperor George V and Queen Mary would visit India, a plan was made to build a grand monument to welcome them. To mark this historic event, the construction of a stunning structure was started in Mumbai, which later came to be known as the Gateway of India. Sir George Cinham, the then Governor of Bombay, laid the foundation stone of this grand monument on March 31, 1911.

However, due to delayed construction work, when the Emperor and Empress arrived in Mumbai on December 2, 1911, the Gateway of India was incomplete. Yet this challenge proved to be a brilliant solution that made the reception worth remembering. A massive and magnificent cardboard gate he designed was a replica of the Gateway of India. It was a temporary construction but provided a fitting welcome to the Emperor and Empress of Mumbai.
