The Karnataka government has called for electric buses from the central government with the objective of enhancing city transport. To that effect, the state Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has made a formal submission before the Ministry of Heavy Industries. In which the necessity of augmenting public transport in big cities through electric buses has been mentioned.

The state's bid has been welcomed by the central government. Union Heavy Industries and Steel Minister HD Kumaraswamy met with high-ranking ministry officials and promised Karnataka all support. He added that the allocation of buses is being processed, and electric buses will be supplied to Karnataka on a priority and phased basis.

HD Kumaraswamy said, "Due to the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, public transport is being revamped across the country. Karnataka will also definitely get electric buses under the PM E-Drive scheme."

Under the PM E-Drive scheme, 14,028 electric buses will be sent to 9 major cities of the country. The aim of this scheme is to make urban bus services environmentally friendly and promote e-mobility. Under the scheme, along with buses, work will also be done on charging stations, bus depots, and vehicle maintenance systems so that the entire system can be made smart and sustainable.

There was also a discussion between the central and state government officials on how to roll out these buses faster. For this, many infrastructure models are being considered, so that the use of electric buses can be started soon in urban areas.

This scheme will be in force from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2026, and its total cost is Rs 10,900 crore. The aim is to make public transport eco-friendly and reduce congestion and pollution in cities.

Union Minister Kumaraswamy also said, "We are not just distributing buses but building a clean, smart, and inclusive transport future for the people of the country. Karnataka is guaranteed my and the ministry's full support."
