Coromandel Express Accident: Death Toll Reaches 261; PM Modi Heads To Balasore, West Bengal CM Arrives
The impending visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Balasore and his scheduled meeting with the injured individuals at a hospital in Cuttack hold immense significance.



Yesterday evening, a heart-wrenching train accident shook the nation as it unfolded near Balasore in Odisha. The incident left us all in a state of shock and disbelief, witnessing the loss of precious lives and numerous injuries. The Coromandel Express, bound for Chennai, derailed, causing several coaches to tumble onto an adjacent track, directly in the path of another train heading from Yeswanthpur to Howrah. The collision resulted in a substantial number of casualties, with at least 261 reported deaths and over 900 individuals injured.
In response to this tragedy, the authorities swiftly launched an extensive rescue operation at the accident site in Bahanaga Bazar, near Balasore. Rescue teams have been working tirelessly to extricate survivors from the derailed coaches and provide critical medical assistance to the injured. The severity of the situation has compelled Prime Minister Narendra Modi to schedule a visit to the accident site, where he will personally meet with the injured individuals at nearby hospitals.
This horrific incident stands as one of the deadliest train crashes in recent Indian history. To ascertain the cause of the derailment and subsequent collision, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter, led by a high-level team. Furthermore, he has announced ex gratia payments of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased, Rs 2 lakh for the seriously injured, and Rs 50,000 for those with minor injuries. This gesture acknowledges the immense loss and suffering faced by the affected individuals and aims to provide some financial support during these challenging times.
