ChatGPT company is making a new AI device, may be launched in 2027; see design
OpenAI has acquired former Apple designer Jony Ive's AI hardware startup io. After this deal, both the companies are working on a new AI device. It is believed that it will go into mass production in 2027. According to the information received, this device will be compact and elegant like iPod Shuffle, which will have camera and microphone but no display.

After OpenAI's purchase of Apple's former designer Jony Ive's artificial intelligence (AI) hardware startup io, news about the AI device being created by the two firms emerged. This device is still in its prototyping stage and is slightly bigger than the shut-down venture Ai Pin of Humane, yet it can look as 'elegant' as the iPod Shuffle. Production in mass volume will commence in 2027, while assembly and shipping can take place outside China in order to minimize geopolitical risk.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), TF Securities International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Jony Ive and OpenAI's new AI device is currently in the prototype phase, slightly larger than Humane's Ai Pin, a contextual computer and wearable device. It could be as compact and 'elegant' as an iPod Shuffle. However, being in the prototype phase, its final design and specifications may change.
The AI device may have cameras and microphones for environmental detection, which will be especially useful when the device is worn around the neck, providing contextual awareness of the wearer's surroundings. According to the information received, it will not have a display feature, but it will connect to smartphones and PCs, using their computational power and display capabilities.
Kuo said that Jony Ive's io and OpenAI will start mass production of this AI device in 2027. Amid geopolitical challenges and the tariff war between China and the US, its assembly and shipping may take place outside China. Vietnam is a possible location for its assembly.
According to previous reports, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has given a glimpse of this device to the company's employees. It can be kept in the user's pocket or on the desk, it will also work as an AI neckpiece. Altman reportedly clarified that this AI device is not glasses, and Jony Ive is also skeptical about making wearable AI products. It is being called the third core device to be kept on the desk after the MacBook Pro and iPhone.
