Prime Minister Narendra Modi appeared in a special style on Sunday, the 76th Republic Day. He wore a dark brown closed-neck coat and a red-yellow colored turban with a white kurta-pajama. Bandhani is a type of tie-dye fabric, popular in Gujarat and Rajasthan. It is a method in which the fabric is dyed by tying and knotting. Georgette, chiffon, silk, and cotton fabric are tied tightly with a thread before putting it in the dye pool and when this thread is opened, the tied part becomes colored. Then the design is made by hand using thread on the cloth.
Earlier in 2023, Modi wore a multi-colored Rajasthani safa with a kurta and churidar pajama. On the 77th Independence Day this year, he chose a multi-colored Rajasthani style safa, whose end (chhela) was long till below the waist. In 2019, after returning to power for a second term with a thumping majority, Modi wore a multi-colored safa while delivering his sixth Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort. Rajasthani safa or turban has been the Prime Minister's choice for Independence Day and Republic Day.
On the occasion of his first Independence Day speech in 2014, he wore a bright red Jodhpuri Bandhej safa. In 2015, Prime Minister Modi wore a multicolored lehariya yellow safa and in 2016, a pink and yellow tie-and-dye safa. In 2017, the Prime Minister's safa was a mix of bright red and yellow. It had golden lines all around. He wore a saffron safa while addressing the nation at the Red Fort in 2018. From the bright red bandhani safa of Kutch to the yellow Rajasthani safa, Modi's outfits on Republic Day have been the main attractions.
In 2022, PM Modi chose a unique traditional cap of Uttarakhand for the Republic Day celebrations. This cap had Brahmakamal. Brahmakamal is the state flower of Uttarakhand, which the Prime Minister has been using on every visit to Kedarnath. Earlier in 2021, Modi wore a 'Halari' turban with yellow dots during the Republic Day parade. It was presented to the Prime Minister by Jam Saheb of the royal family of Jamnagar.
