Luxury Meets Innovation in Shanghai’s 88-Meter-Deep Waterfall Hotel
Did you know that there's a hotel in China built inside a quarry? Yes, this hotel has a total of 18 floors, 16 of which are underground. Furthermore, you'll be amazed by the architecture and construction cost of this hotel.
There are many buildings in the world known for their unique architecture. This list features a unique hotel in China. This hotel is constructed within a quarry and is referred to as the Waterfall Hotel. Situated in the Songjiang area of Shanghai, China, the Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland Hotel is an awe-inspiring work of architecture and engineering. This unusual hotel is constructed within an existing quarry, hence also called the 'Quarry Hotel' or 'Mine Hotel'.
The most unusual aspect of the hotel is its construction, within the walls of an 88-meter-deep mine. There are a total of 18 floors, 16 of them underground and two underwater. A 90-meter-high man-made waterfall in front of it is an added attraction that makes the hotel itself look more beautiful, hence the name "Waterfall Hotel."
The hotel has a fascinating history. This mine was dug by the Japanese in the 1950s to build a bunker during the war. Later, it was partially filled with water and transformed into an artificial lake. In 2006, a Shanghai-based property group saw the potential in this site and decided to transform it into a luxury hotel. The project began in 2009 and cost approximately ₹4,000 crore to complete.

Several renowned architectural firms were selected to design this hotel. The hotel's design incorporates Feng Shui principles and is called an "inverted groundscraper" because it is built downward rather than upward.
Viewed from above, it resembles an "S" shape. The hotel has been developed as a single-use plastic-free hotel in an environmentally conscious manner. It is a "brownfield revival project" that utilizes abandoned land.
A stay at this hotel is not only relaxing but also adventurous. There are cliffside villas and underwater suites, where guests can view the lake directly through glass walls. The hotel has a total of 337 rooms, each equipped with amenities such as a voice-controlled system.
For dining and beverage options, the hotel offers an underwater seafood restaurant, Cantonese fine dining, and a quarry bar. Additionally, the hotel features a watersports area, an infinity pool, and a spa. For thrill-seekers, the nearby theme park offers activities like ziplines, bungee jumps, rock climbing, and glass walkways.
