So many fake photos are being created with the help of AI these days that almost every photo seen on social media raises suspicion. While looking at any photo, the thought that comes to mind is: Is this real or made with AI? To deal with this confusion, Google has added a new feature to its Gemini app.

According to Google, the image verification tool is now natively integrated into the Gemini app. This can verify if a photo has been created or edited using any of Google's AI tools. The company had introduced it with its new Gemini 3-powered Nano Banana Pro model. Its clear objective is to offer maximum transparency on AI-created products to users.

This system uses a digital watermarking technology called SynthID. When a photo is created using Google's AI tools, SynthID places an invisible mark within it. This mark does not alter the photo's quality or appearance. This mark is invisible to the naked eye, but Gemini can scan it. This mark allows Gemini to determine whether an image was created by Google's AI system.

This feature also has a significant drawback: Gemini can only recognize images created or edited using Google's AI tools. If the photo was created using another platform or another company/developer's AI model, Gemini will not be able to verify it. Nevertheless, this feature could be useful on a large scale. According to Google, since SynthID's launch in 2023, more than 20 billion AI-generated images have been watermarked. These can now be verified through the Gemini app.

Users can use this feature very easily. Select the image you want to verify. It could be a photo from social media, a photo received in a chat, or an image saved on your phone/laptop. Upload the image to Gemini. Then, ask questions like, "Is this an image created by Google AI?" or "Is this an AI-generated image?" Gemini then looks for the SynthID watermark in the image and provides a clear answer based on its findings.

Google says this update comes at a time when AI-generated content is growing rapidly. While this tool isn't yet capable of detecting AI images from every platform, it's considered a necessary and useful step to ensure the authenticity of images created by Google's own AI systems and to increase trust in online content.
