The rising craze for fast food can sometimes be so dangerous, as can be ascertained from this particular case. "The addiction to momos took an innocent child on a journey that cost the family nearly Rs. 8.5 million. While it started as a taste addiction, it gradually turned into a story of trust, greed, and exploitation." This is not just a case of a child being weak in character; it is a case of addiction to fast food and its social and psychological implications.

A shocking case has come to light from Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, whereby a 14-year-old boy addicted to momos took out the jewelry worth about ₹8.5 million from his home and gave it to the three persons operating a momo stall. The boy's father, Vimlesh, explained that the shopkeepers initially offered him free momos and later demanded jewelry from him, causing significant financial losses to the family. The boy's father, Vimlesh, explained that the shopkeepers initially offered him free momos and later demanded jewelry from him, causing significant financial losses to the family.

A study by the Indian Institute of Hotel Management revealed that many street foods sold in major cities like Delhi, including momos, samosas, golgappas, and burgers, contained excessive fecal bacteria. This clearly indicates a lack of food hygiene, which can weaken everything from the stomach to immunity.

Momos are often laced with monosodium glutamate (MSG), which enhances taste but can have dangerous health effects. Excessive consumption of MSG can lead to weakened bones, heartburn, excessive sweating, and nervous system problems. This is why Maggi once sparked a major controversy.

Cabbage is the most commonly used vegetable in veg momos. At many stalls, its stuffing is not cooked properly. The harmful substances present in undercooked cabbage can increase the risk of neurological diseases in the long run.

The spicy red chutney served with momos is a different level, but this same chutney can be a major threat to the stomach. Excessive chili and chemical coloring can cause stomach pain, gas, acidity, and even hemorrhoids. Consuming it daily can harm the intestines.

Some research and food inspection reports have also revealed that chicken momos sold on the roadside contain old or spoiled chicken meat. Although spices and chutney add strong flavor to these momos, their impact on the body can cause severe food poisoning.

Generally, it is noticed that the street vendors don’t even take the trouble of washing the vegetables properly. Further, momos are prepared in bulk quantity at one go, which results in them remaining raw from inside. These momos can bring infections and diarrhea once they enter the stomach.

The outer cover of momos is prepared from refined flour. Sometimes, chemicals are also added to this flour to make it white and soft. Regular consumption of this kind of flour can lead to diabetes, obesity, and pancreatic disorders.

It is not true that all momos are harmful. This research is based specifically on roadside momos. If you like momos, eat them only from a clean, reliable shop or restaurant.
