Eric Garcetti may be the new US ambassador to India: President Biden nominated

Former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti may be the new US Ambassador to India. The Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate (Upper House) of the US Parliament voted in favour of Garcetti for the ambassador to India. Now there will be voting in the Senate, after which Eric will become the US Ambassador to India.
US President Joe Biden nominated Garcetti. Thirteen members of the Foreign Relations Committee voted in favour of Garcetti. These included two Republican Party MPs – Todd Young and Bill Haggerty. During this, the committee said that keeping a permanent ambassador in India is an issue of national security.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously selected Garcetti. Soon the appointment can be approved. Many experts have blamed political slowness for the ambassadors not being approved by the Senate.
8 members of the committee voted against Garcetti. Garcetti was nominated last year as well but did not take action against his office staff who sexually assaulted him while he was Los Angeles mayor. Due to this, he was not appointed as ambassador.
A report presented in the Senate in May 2022 said - Garcetti knew that his chief of staff Rick Jacobs had sexually harassed a Los Angeles police officer. Despite this, Garcetti did not take action against Jacobs.
America does not have a permanent ambassador in India for 2 years. Experts said that the absence of a permanent ambassador in an important country like India could affect the relationship between the two countries. The ambassador has an understanding of the local perspective on important issues, which helps in finding solutions to disputes between the two countries.
He said that due to the lack of ambassadors between the two countries, there are problems in business. This is the reason why there are obstacles to the progress of the policy. In October 2022, the US-appointed A Elizabeth Jones as the temporary in-charge of the Indian Embassy. In the absence of a permanent ambassador, this period has been one of the most tumultuous in US-India relations.
Deepa Olapalli, professor at the Sigur Center for Asian Studies at George Washington University, says the US is India's largest trading partner and arms supplier. When Japanese, Australian, and American ambassadors are present in countries like Korea, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, so the absence of an American ambassador in India is a big mistake.
The US does not have a permanent ambassador in 50 countries, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE.
