Germany suffered defeat against Paraguay in a penalty shootout during the Round of 32 in the FIFA World Cup 2026. In the wake of their failure, Oliver Kahn, the great German goalkeeper and ex-captain, expressed his opinion concerning Germany's major weakness. According to him, being blessed with great talents is not sufficient in such tournaments as the World Cup.
Kahn argued that under Nagelsmann's leadership Germany has proved its ability to play and has the qualities needed, but has some weaknesses compared to the best teams in the world. He said, "Germany has once again demonstrated that it belongs among the top teams in the world. The team possesses quality, tactical flexibility, and a clear identity under Julian Nagelsmann. However, compared to teams like France and Spain, I think their overall quality still falls a little short."
According to Kahn, the true test in knockout matches is mental strength. He said, "Football isn't just a game of talent. Building a strong team spirit throughout the tournament, especially in the knockout stages, is crucial. Talent alone is never enough. The biggest challenge now is handling pressure, because at this level, even small mistakes are severely punished."
"I'm more impressed by the balance of the entire team than by any single player. Jamal Musiala has shown remarkable creativity after returning from a serious injury. Florian Wirtz hasn't had an easy season at Liverpool but has bloomed into a more mature player." Kahn said the team’s overall balance, not any individual, was Germany’s biggest strength. Experienced players provide leadership. This balance is crucial for successful teams.
The former Bayern Munich captain said that the goalkeeper's responsibility has increased more than ever in today's times. He said, "Today's goalkeeper isn't just a shot-stopper. He's also the first attacker and the last defender. He must possess excellent technical ability, the ability to make quick decisions, and the courage to play under pressure. But one thing remains unchanged: when decisive saves are needed, the goalkeeper must perform at all costs."
Kahn also lavished praise on veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. He said, "Nothing can replace experience. This tournament wasn't easy for Manuel, as he didn't get many opportunities to showcase his abilities. But he provided calmness, leadership, and confidence to the entire team. His mere presence gives the defenders a sense of security. His consistent performance at this level, even at the age of 40, demonstrates his incredible professionalism."
Kahn believes that if Germany is to once again become one of the strongest teams in world football, it will have to develop not only talent but also mental strength, collective solidarity and the ability to withstand the pressure of big matches.
