Actress Gargi Kundu, who rose to fame with her appearance in Society, has often been tagged as the “Cry Baby” of the show. In a candid conversation, she addressed this label, her emotional nature, her journey from Kolkata to Mumbai, her advocacy for animals, and the challenges of being a dusky-skinned artist in Bollywood.

On Being Called “Cry Baby”

Talking about how the nickname stuck with her, Gargi laughed, “Even if you Google my name, ‘Cry Baby’ comes up. I was very emotional in the show, and I used to get hurt easily. Sometimes I cried, so people gave me that name. But I don’t think being emotional is a bad thing.”

Journey from Kolkata to Mumbai

Sharing her motivation behind shifting cities, Gargi explained, “I grew up watching Bollywood and always dreamt of coming to Mumbai. I had worked in the Kolkata industry, but opportunities there were limited. Coverage was less, pay was low, and the work didn’t reach wider audiences. That’s why I moved to Mumbai. In just two years here, I’ve experienced more than I did in 23 years in Kolkata.” Still, she admits missing Kolkata’s Durga Puja, food, and the cultural vibe.

Animal Welfare and Street Dogs Issue

Known for her compassion, Gargi has taken responsibility for several animals. “I’ve helped treat and support many street dogs, cats, and birds. Officially, around fifteen dogs’ expenses I’ve managed through NGOs. I do whatever I can.”
On questioning the government about stray dog issues, she emphasized proper shelter and vaccination. “If humans struggle for shelter and food, what will happen to animals? Vaccination and care are important; otherwise, rabies cases will rise.”

Global Rumors and Industry Friends

On rumors of a project with Aryan Khan, Gargi stayed tight-lipped: “I can’t say anything now. Maybe in a month or two.” She also praised comedian Munawar Faruqui: “He roasts people fearlessly, but he’s a hardworking and good person. His fanbase is incredibly loyal—something very rare.”

Views on Reality Shows and Body Shaming

While offers for reality shows keep coming, Gargi is cautious. “Many people warn me that too much reality TV might affect my acting career. I’m still deciding.”
On body shaming, her voice turned strong: “It’s like racism. In India, fair skin still gets more opportunities, no matter the talent. I’ve often been rejected despite good auditions, just because they wanted a fair-skinned, upmarket look. I want to prove that dusky skin can shine again in Bollywood.”

Her Vision for Change

Asked what she’d change in society, Gargi said, “Respect for women. Even today, people think marriage is a girl’s ultimate goal. That mindset needs to change. A woman’s worth is not decided by marriage.”

Looking Ahead

While she couldn’t reveal details, Gargi confirmed she has an upcoming project in the pipeline. With her determination, emotional honesty, and bold voice against stereotypes, she is emerging as a fresh voice in the industry.
