The government sought the approval of Parliament for incurring an additional net expenditure of Rs 51,462.86 crore during the financial year which will be closing in March. The majority of it will be for pensions and fertilizer subsidies.

The overall additional expenditure for which the government is looking is over Rs 6.78 lakh crore. Of this amount, Rs 6.27 lakh crore will be financed through the head of receipts and savings.

According to the second batch of supplementary grant demands presented in the Lok Sabha by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the net additional expenditure of the government in the current fiscal year will be Rs 51,462.86 crore. The additional expenditure includes Rs 12,000 crore for fertilizer subsidy and Rs 13,449 crore for government employees' pensions, including the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS).

The total expenditure also includes Rs 8,476 crore for defense pensions and Rs 5,322 crore for the Department of Telecommunications.
