Jharsuguda (Odisha) [India], May 26: Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, marked World Bee Day by organising a vibrant community event in Laikera, Jharsuguda, bringing together more than 50 local farmers who are part of its Vedamrit Honey Cluster Development Project. It was an occasion to spread awareness on the indispensable role of bees in natural ecosystems, while recognising efforts to aid their preservation through sustainable beekeeping.
The United Nations has designated May 20 as World Bee Day to underscore the crucial role played by bees in the natural pollination process, making them essential globally in ensuring food security and preserving biodiversity. It is also an occasion to recognise the increasing threats faced by bees, and identify community-led avenues for their continued preservation.
The event organised by Vedanta was attended by officials from the Agriculture and Horticulture Departments, along with employees from Vedanta Jharsuguda and several community members. It featured expert-led training sessions on scientific methods of honey extraction, sustainable apiculture practices, and the positive ecological impact of beekeeping. Participating farmers also discussed opportunities around market linkages, improved storage facilities, and product diversification. As part of the occasion, farmers who achieved the highest revenue from honey production were also honoured with mementos and financial rewards.
