Understanding Mental Health in India: When to Seek Professional Help?

India is undergoing a mental health crisis which is far larger than most public conversations reflect. According to the National Mental Health Survey by National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, nearly 150 million Indians require mental health support, yet many never receive proper treatment. Studies by The Lancet also show that anxiety, depression, and substance abuse contribute heavily to the country’s disease burden. Despite the rising awareness, stigma and lack of understanding still prevent many people from resorting to professional help.

One of the biggest challenges is that mental health conditions often develop gradually. This happens through stress, emotional exhaustion, sleep issues, social withdrawal, or unhealthy coping habits. Given that these signs are frequently regarded as “normal stress,” the first instinct of individuals is to refuse help at all or seek support only after their emotional health begins affecting daily life.

That said, over the last few years professionals across India have also noticed more families becoming open to structured mental health treatment. In major metropolitan cities like Mumbai, access to specialised mental health services and rehabilitation programs has also improved significantly. Consequently, many people facing  severe anxiety, alcohol dependency, substance abuse, or emotional burnout are now seeking professional support through a rehabilitation centre in Mumbai for therapy, counselling, medical care, and long-term recovery support.

Decoding the Connection Between Mental Health and Addiction

Mental health is not entirely about psychiatric illnesses. It impacts how individuals cope up with stress, emotions, relationships while just getting through their day-to-day life. In fact, India has emerged as a center for growing mental health issues. Reports of anxiety disorders, sadness, panic attacks, stress from trauma, and behavioral addictions have been reported nationwide, affecting people of all ages.

Also, addiction and mental health issues are often interrelated as per experts. According to the World Health Organization, people struggling with anxiety, depression or emotional trauma are more likely to develop alcohol or substance dependency. This is because these substances often act as temporary escape from emotional stress. Over time dependency usually worsens emotional and psychological health instead of improving it.
