Australia's renowned cricket player David Warner seems to be facing problems away from the game. On 5 April, he was arrested on charges of drink driving in Sydney. He had twice the required amount of alcohol in his blood. His lawyer’s statement regarding the case came out a month later and shocked everybody.
Bobby Hill, Warner’s lawyer, gave statements during the case stating that the player had made a very bad decision when he chose to drink and drive.
Warner is said to have drunk three glasses of wine while he was visiting a friend’s house. He did not decide to take a cab but preferred to drive himself instead. Surprisingly, he was stopped by police just 11 minutes after his last drink.
This controversy has once again cast a shadow over Warner's career. Questions are now being raised about his captaincy of the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League (BBL). Cricket New South Wales CEO Lee Jarman has stated that these allegations are very serious and will not be taken lightly. While Warner went to play in the PSL in Pakistan amid this controversy, where he scored impressively at an average of 51.2, his off-field actions have damaged his image.
David Warner has a long history of controversies. Warner, who is set to retire from Test cricket in 2024, was also involved in the infamous 2018 ball-tampering scandal, which resulted in a one-year ban. While his career is filled with great achievements, including 112 Tests and 8,786 runs, such incidents disappoint his fans.
According to the lawyer, Warner regrets his mistake and is prepared to face any punishment imposed under New South Wales (NSW) law.
