The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has started the process of procuring two more mobile BSL-3 laboratories. This is a crucial step in addressing any epidemic and enhancing public health. These mobile BSL-3 laboratories are very effective, especially in remote areas. Two mobile BSL laboratories, named Rambaan, are currently being operated by the ICMR.
Amongst all available mobile BSL-3 laboratories, one is operational at the National Virology Institute at Pune and another at the RMRC Hospital at Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. There is also India's first rapid action mobile BSL-3 laboratory, named Rambaan, which was completely erected in India. It can be transported anywhere and is designed such that there can be conducted diagnostic tests needed in case of any epidemic or transmission of any dangerous disease.
This is a scheme of ICMR, which has been developed by a Mumbai-based company called Cleanzeds Contamination Control Private Limited under the patronage of the Prime Minister's Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The mobile BSL-3 laboratory was successfully deployed for the first time in Kozhikode, Kerala. Actually, at that time, the infection of the Nipah virus had spread in Kerala, due to which it was deployed in September 2023 for the examination of people. After this, in July 2024, the mobile BSL-3 was deployed in the Malappuram district of Kerala. This mobile laboratory is built on a Bharat Benz vehicle, in which BS-6 conditions have been followed. The load carrying capacity of this vehicle is 17 thousand kg, and it can work smoothly even in extremely high temperatures and very high altitudes.
This laboratory is designed to work in a negative air pressure environment. It is equipped with a modern heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system. It is also equipped with modern equipment to deal with biological waste. This laboratory is divided into four parts. Zone 1 has a driver and a change room. Zone 2 has a shower and an internal change room for bathing. Zone 3 has the main laboratory, and Zone 4 has the decontamination area. For power supply in the laboratory, there is a provision of a diesel generator along with a direct power supply. There is also a petrol generator backup. Walkie-talkies and CCTV are also arranged for communication in the laboratory.
