The players from Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders were seen wearing black armbands on Tuesday. During the 22nd IPL 2026 match, both team players were seen wearing black armbands as a tribute to the late Indian cricketer CD Gopinath. KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and decided to bowl at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
CP Gopinath, who featured in eight Tests for India, recently died. He was one of the players who made up India's first Test-winning team. India recorded their first-ever Test victory over England in Madras (presently Chennai) in 1952. Gopinath played eight Tests for India between 1951 and 1960.
Gopinath played an important part in Madras cricket. He led the state team and contributed significantly to its progress. In his first-class career, Gopinath scored 4,259 runs in 60 matches and played a key role in Madras's first-ever Ranji Trophy title. He scored a century in the final.
After retirement, CD Gopinath served as a national selector. He also served as manager during India's tour of England in 1979. He remained involved in the game for decades and earned considerable respect for his cricketing acumen.
It is worth noting that the Kolkata Knight Riders have yet to register a single win in the current IPL. The Ajinkya Rahane-led KKR team is currently at the bottom of the points table. KKR will try to open their account of victory in the league against CSK.
