India defeated South Africa 3-1 in their most recent four-match T20 International series. Something that happened in the final match of this series on November 15 has since become a talking point. Fast bowler Gerald Coetzee of South Africa became upset with the umpire's decision during the match and protested by making an offensive remark, which the ICC did not approve of. Coetzee's actions when he gave a wide ball were deemed unacceptable by the ICC.
The ICC has thereby released a press statement that Gerald Coetzee has been found to have breached Rule 2.8 of the Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel which deals with public criticism of an umpire's decision in an international match. ICC has reprimanded Coetzee and put a demerit point against his account.
Coetzee pleaded guilty to the offense and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. There was, therefore, no need for a formal hearing. In this case, on-field umpires Allahuddin Palekar and Stephen Harris, third umpire Lubabalo Gcuma, and fourth umpire Arno Jacobs had made allegations against Coetzee.
