There has been an increase in the sowing of summer crops in the country; however, the production of paddy and mung beans has come down. In the latest report from the Ministry of Agriculture, it has been reported that almost all the zaid crop sowing activity is nearing completion. As per the data released by the Ministry, as of May 22, total area cultivated till now stands at 86.02 lakh hectare, up from 83.50 lakh hectare last year, recording a growth of about 3%. Zaid crops are sown following the harvesting of Rabi crops and before the Kharif sowing. They are comprised of crops like mung bean, black gram, sesame seed, and watermelon.
Apart from paddy and mung beans, sowing area of all other crops has witnessed an increase. The Madhya Pradesh government's announcement of a bonus on urad, in addition to the MSP, is having an impact on farmers, leading to an increase in sowing area. However, the total acreage under cultivation of mung beans, the country's highest-growing summer crop, has declined in Madhya Pradesh.
According to an update released by the Ministry of Agriculture, paddy sowing decreased from 3.242 million hectares to 3.105 million hectares, a decrease of 4 percent. Meanwhile, acreage under coarse grains increased from 1.425 million hectares last year to 1.601 million hectares, a 12 percent increase. Acreage under maize has increased by 18 percent, from 8.5 lakh hectares to 10 lakh hectares.
Data shows that acreage under millet has increased from 5.2 lakh hectares to 5.4 lakh hectares. The area under finger millet has increased from 0.16 lakh hectares to 0.22 lakh hectares, and the area under sorghum has increased from 0.36 lakh hectares to 0.37 lakh hectares.
The Madhya Pradesh government announced an MSP of ₹7,800 per quintal for black gram, along with a bonus of ₹600 per quintal, stating that the move was aimed at encouraging farmers to shift from green gram to black gram during the summer season.
The area under oilseed cultivation has also increased from 9.58 lakh hectares to 11.04 lakh hectares this season, with peanut cultivation increasing from 4.20 lakh hectares to 5.51 lakh hectares, and sesame cultivation increasing from 4.96 lakh hectares to 5.07 lakh hectares.
The government has set a foodgrain production target of 19.67 million tonnes from summer crops in the 2025-26 crop year (July-June), including 12.15 million tonnes of rice, 4 million tonnes of maize, 1.14 million tonnes of nutritious cereals, and 2.39 million tonnes of pulses. The target for millet is 1.10 million tonnes, 0.32 million tonnes of urad, 2.07 million tonnes of green gram, and 1.37 million tonnes of oilseeds.
