The government is making a significant effort to make Ujjain, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav's hometown, a smart and modern city. The Urban Administration and Housing Department has drawn up a hi-tech ₹1,900 crore plan for running pod taxis in the city and submitted it to the state government. With this project, Ujjain will be one of the few cities in the country with a modern transport system.
13 stations have been suggested under the scheme on two 25.46-kilometer routes. After considering the suggestion of the division-level committee involved in Simhastha operations, the Pad Taxi is now being put up for approval in the State-level Supervisory Committee meeting. If this project is approved, Ujjain will be the first religious and pilgrimage city in the country to have a metro-like facility in the form of a Pad Taxi. It was reported that the Pad Taxi is an automated, driverless, and electric vehicle system that runs on elevated steel tracks. It does not have a driver, but is operated by computers and sensors.
Resembling a compact car, this taxi can transport 4 to 6 passengers at a time. This traffic-free and environmentally friendly system will prove helpful in modernizing and streamlining urban transportation. Its implementation in Ujjain will see a major transformation in tourism, religious movement, and urban mobility. The project is being aligned with preparations for Simhastha 2028. Officials believe that the Pad Taxi will not only modernize the city's image but also provide a convenient travel experience for millions of devotees and tourists.
