The race for the IPL 2026 playoffs has become extremely exciting. The halfway mark of the season is here, and there are ten teams that have an equal opportunity to make it to the playoffs. Some teams will find it easier than others; some have had a fantastic start, while others have faltered early. Punjab Kings have not suffered any defeats; however, Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders may be finding it difficult to compete.
Punjab, along with Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals, seems to be on top. Each team gets 14 league matches, and typically winning eight of them ensures a playoff spot. However, a team with seven wins can also qualify depending on net run rate and the performance of other teams.
Currently, Punjab Kings lead the points table, having won six out of seven matches, with one match abandoned due to rain. The team has 13 points and a strong net run rate. Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bangalore have won five out of seven matches and lost two. Sunrisers Hyderabad have won five out of eight matches, also having 10 points, and a better net run rate.
Rajasthan Royals, who are in fourth place, are also considered strong contenders for the playoffs. The team has 10 points and can secure a playoff berth by winning three of the remaining six matches. Gujarat Titans have won four out of eight, while Chennai Super Kings have won three out of eight. Delhi Capitals are slightly better off than the other two, having won three out of seven, but they remain in seventh place.
At the bottom, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Lucknow are in the worst shape. All three teams have won just two matches each so far. Lucknow has the worst net run rate this season, which has virtually eliminated their playoff chances. Kolkata has won just two out of eight matches, and their net run rate is also in the negative, making their chances extremely slim.
Although Mumbai Indians have played seven matches and won only two, they still have seven remaining matches. If they win six of these, their hopes of reaching the playoffs remain intact. History bears witness that Mumbai Indians have made a spectacular comeback in the second leg many times to make it to the playoffs.
