Pali: In a quiet village nestled between fields in Pali district, 19-year-old Saraswati has scripted a remarkable story of resilience and determination. Coming from a modest rural background, she has overcome economic constraints and heavy family responsibilities to emerge as the second topper in the district in Class 10 examinations, scoring 78 percent marks.

Saraswati belongs to a large joint family of 25 members living under one roof. Her home stands amid agricultural fields, and the family’s livelihood depends primarily on farming and livestock rearing. Limited financial resources and daily household chores often disrupted her studies, yet she refused to give up.

She completed her early education up to Class 8 at a small school near her village dhani. For further studies, she had to travel seven kilometres daily, which proved challenging. She then joined the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya in Pali under the residential schooling facility. However, due to certain personal reasons, she had to return to her village midway, resulting in failure in the examinations. At the age of around 15 in 2022, Saraswati was forced to drop out of school.

For nearly two years, she stayed away from formal education, engaged in household and farm work. Yet the desire to study and build a better future never faded. During this period, she learned about the Pragrati Camp run by the NGO ‘Educate Girls’ in her village. She shared her feelings with the inspiring camp facilitator, Dhnaki Devi, who spoke to her parents and motivated the family to support Saraswati’s return to studies.

In 2024, Saraswati enrolled in the Rajasthan State Open School. She began attending the Pragrati Camp regularly, dedicating nearly three hours daily to studies. Beyond academics, the camp provided her with essential life skills and digital literacy training, significantly boosting her confidence.

Balancing studies with household responsibilities was never easy. She continued to help her family in farming and daily chores while carving out time for her books. Her consistent effort and discipline during this period reflected her unwavering commitment.

When the Rajasthan State Open School Class 10 results were announced, Saraswati’s perseverance bore fruit. Scoring 78 percent, she secured the second position in Pali district. In recognition of her district-level achievement, she has been selected for the prestigious ‘Meera Award’.

The news brought immense joy to her family and the entire village. Saraswati’s success has become a beacon of hope, inspiring several other girls in the village to re-enrol and resume their education.

The ‘Educate Girls’ organisation had invited her to attend its 18th Foundation Day celebration in Mumbai, but family circumstances prevented her from travelling. She was, however, felicitated at the convocation ceremony held in Pali.

Currently, Saraswati has enrolled in Class 12 and is pursuing her studies with the same dedication. Her dream is to become a teacher and secure a government job so she can uplift her family and contribute to society.

Saraswati’s journey stands as a powerful example of how determination, timely support, and access to education can help a girl break barriers in rural India. Her story reminds us that even in the face of adversity, consistent effort and the right guidance can transform lives.

Her achievement not only brings pride to her village but also underscores the importance of organisations like ‘Educate Girls’ that work tirelessly to bring dropout girls back to education. In a region where many girls still face similar challenges, Saraswati has shown that with courage and hard work, dreams are indeed achievable.
