At an elevation of around 14,000 feet in Ladakh, among the mountains of light and rugged terrain, there appears to be something miraculous: a place that even bends gravity. The magnetic bend of the Leh-Kargil-Srinagar highway has become the object of many discussions because of its strange name and equally odd nature.
It sounds like something right out of a fairy tale; automobiles actually go uphill by themselves even without engines running. Could there possibly be a giant magnet hiding under the earth at Magnetic Hill, or does it have anything to do with optical illusions?
The authorities have demarcated a point at Magnetic Hill. When tourists park their vehicles inside the box in neutral gear, the vehicle slowly begins to move upward at a speed of 10 to 20 km/h. This is natural for anyone to be surprised by, as gravity dictates that things should roll downward, not upward.
This isn't a magical or magnetic force, but rather an optical illusion. It's also known worldwide as Gravity Hill.
The geography and slope surrounding this road are such that a road that actually goes downward appears to be going upward. The layout of the surrounding hills and the lack of a horizon confuse our eyes. We perceive the vehicle as going upward, when in reality, it is actually rolling downward due to gravity.
Beyond science, the residents of Ladakh have their own ancient beliefs about this place. Locals believe that this place once served as a path to heaven. According to them, this power only pulled those worthy of it upward, while those unworthy were never able to progress. Even today, many tourists view it as a spiritual experience.
If you want to witness this mystery with your own eyes, it's best to visit between May and September. The weather is pleasant during this time and the roads are completely open.
