Before you begin the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, it is recommended that you feel fit and fine about your health condition. The Yatra has certain age limitations as well.

Regarding the health care in the course of the Yatra, Dr. Monica Mahajan (Principal Director, Internal Medicine, Max Hospital, New Delhi) says that those who suffer from existing diseases or older age need to avoid such a tough trip.

Before the Yatra, consult a doctor and check your health conditions to find out if you are fit enough to travel at high altitudes.

In case if you have diseases of the heart, angina, kidneys or diabetes, take additional precautions about your health conditions. In case your doctor finds out that you are unfit, don't go.

Prior to your trip, it is recommended to pass some basic blood test and the heart examination to check if you have some out-of-range indicators. Also, you need to know if you are anemic, what is your hemoglobin level and if you have high blood sugar.

Your kidney and heart functions have no problems. If you suffer from breathing or asthma problems, take into account this issue and make sure they are under control. Minor problems may be treated properly and with some medicines. Major problems require your special attention and good health check-up.

Preparing for a trip also includes maintaining your fitness level. Increase your fitness level by exercising regularly, as this will reduce your difficulties while climbing high altitudes. If you haven't exercised before or are very sedentary, a sudden trip can create problems for you.

Before embarking on a trip, it's important to continuously improve your energy levels, diet, and fitness. Your diet should contain adequate protein to strengthen your muscles. Your body's energy reserves should be sufficient to maintain a basic fitness level, ensuring you don't face any difficulties during your trip.

It's wise to prepare a basic first aid kit before embarking on your trip. It should include medications for common coughs, colds, fever, stomach upset, acidity, and vomiting. Additionally, you can also take medications for dizziness and high-altitude discomfort, such as Diamax.

Take all medications only on the advice of a doctor. Similarly, to avoid pulmonary problems at high altitudes, you can carry certain medications with you on your doctor's advice. Certain medications are required when climbing above 10,000 feet to prevent swelling in the lungs and brain.

To prevent cuts and abrasions during your trip, you should carry antiseptic cream, painkillers, bandages for sprains, and sunscreen. If you regularly take any medication, consult your doctor and ensure you take adequate medication to avoid problems like running out or losing it while traveling.

It's crucial to maintain hydration during your trip. You should be hydrated, and you should be careful about your food and drink. Avoid eating anything that could cause discomfort. If you experience shortness of breath or chest tightness or heaviness while traveling at high altitudes, stop at a medical checkpoint and have it checked.

If your doctor confirms that your oxygen level is normal, continue your journey; otherwise, return immediately. If you experience symptoms of high altitude sickness such as staggering, difficulty walking, vomiting, or blurred vision due to brain swelling, seek immediate medical advice and treatment from a medical team. Remember that mild symptoms can rapidly worsen and lead to serious complications. If you plan ahead and increase your health precautions, your trip will be smooth and enjoyable.
