Income Tax Department, Ranchi Brings Tax Awareness to Life with Innovative Street Play and Citizen Engagement Activities

At the heart of the campaign was a creative and interactive street play, led by the well-known local comic duo ‘Changu-Mangu’. Known for their quick wit and lively performances, the pair captured the attention of audiences with a humorous portrayal of everyday situations that cleverly illustrated the importance of paying taxes. The performance used relatable scenarios to drive home the message that taxes are not merely deductions from income but essential contributions to the nation’s infrastructure and services—from government-run schools and hospitals to roads, electricity, and disaster relief systems.

Audiences from all walks of life, including students, professionals, small business owners, homemakers, and senior citizens, gathered to watch the street play. What made the initiative stand out was its people-centric storytelling. In one act, the characters humorously highlighted how evading taxes to save money for personal luxury can ultimately hinder societal progress, such as delaying construction of rural roads or compromising emergency healthcare access. The performance sparked laughter, but also reflection, leaving the audience with a better understanding of their role in the nation's growth.

Alongside the performances, the department set up an on-the-spot helpdesk, staffed by experienced officers who addressed over 200 citizen queries in real-time. These included doubts regarding income tax return filing, understanding Form 16, tax-saving investment options, and recent changes in taxation rules. This interactive component ensured that the public not only received awareness but also received immediate and practical support, strengthening trust between the department and the community.

A key part of the event was an informative session led by Regional Income Tax Officer Mr. Jayant Mishra, who walked participants through the latest updates in the ITR (Income Tax Return) system. Speaking to the media and attendees, Mr. Mishra stated, “Our objective is not merely tax collection, but to empower citizens with the knowledge that every rupee paid in taxes strengthens the nation’s foundation. Transparency, accountability, and awareness are the cornerstones of our approach to public engagement.” He explained new enhancements in the ITR portal, such as faster refund processing, simplified registration for trusts, and a more intuitive faceless assessment system, all designed to make tax compliance smoother and more citizen-friendly.

Adding a creative element to the event, the department organized a painting competition on the theme ‘Tax for Nation Building’, where students from local schools expressed how tax money transforms lives. From clean drinking water to modern classrooms and hospitals, their vibrant artwork connected civic responsibility with everyday improvements. Winners were felicitated on stage, making the event a platform not just for education but for youth participation.

To further encourage civic accountability, a digital pledge wall was introduced, where citizens were invited to commit to timely and honest tax filing. Hundreds enthusiastically signed the pledge, reflecting growing awareness and a positive change in public perception toward taxes and financial discipline.

The event was lauded by both participants and observers as a refreshing and effective public outreach model. The combination of creativity, direct interaction, and simplified information delivery created a sense of ownership and inclusion among citizens.

Encouraged by the response, the Income Tax Department, Ranchi, has announced plans to replicate this initiative in other cities across Jharkhand, including Dhanbad, Jamshedpur, and Bokaro, in the coming months.
