The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has increased the toll tax. The new rate will now come into effect from 12 midnight on June 2 i.e. Sunday. Officials said that road toll is going to increase by 3-5% across the country from Monday. The annual increase was stopped in April due to the general elections in the country.

Toll charges in India are revised annually in line with inflation, and highway operators have issued notices in local newspapers announcing a 3% to 5% increase at approximately 1,100 toll plazas beginning Monday. A senior official from India's National Highways Authority told Reuters that user fee (toll) rates have been revised since the election process ended. It was put on hold during the elections and is now effective as of June 3.

The toll increase will benefit high-volume operators like IRB Infrastructure Developers and Ashoka Buildcon Ltd. In the last decade, India has invested billions of dollars to expand national highways, which now span approximately 146,000 kilometers, making it the world's second-largest road network.

Toll collection rose to over 540 billion rupees ($6.5 billion) in the 2022/23 financial year from 252 billion in 2018/19. This was helped by an increase in the number of toll plazas and charges along with an increase in road traffic.
