In 2025, Mark Zuckerberg invested billions of dollars to establish Meta Super Intelligence Labs (MSL). Having paid more than $14 billion for acquiring Scale AI, Meta requested Alexandr Wang to take charge of MSL. MSL has just unveiled its very first AI model, named Muse Spark. According to Meta, Muse Spark is its most sophisticated AI model to date.

According to Alexandr Wang, Muse Spark was built completely from scratch in just nine months. This new model will now power Meta AI on various platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook. Muse Spark was likely the same model that MSL was testing under the codename Avocado.

Muse Spark belongs to Meta’s new Muse series of AI models that would replace their old Llama series of models. Spark is not the best model of Meta. The company stated in a blog post, "This initial model is small and fast by design, yet capable of understanding and solving complex problems in science, math, and health."

Meta says that Muse Spark can compete with models like Anthropic's Cloud Opus 4.6 and OpenAI's GPT 5.4 on some benchmarks. These benchmarks include multimodal reasoning, health applications, and agentic AI.

Alexandr Wang explained that Muse Spark's contemplating mode can manage multiple agents working in parallel to handle complex tasks. He added, "In our tests, we found it capable of competing with other highly advanced reasoning models like Gemini Deep Think and GPT Pro."

Wang explained that Muse Spark can understand the world around you. This AI can solve complex problems in science or math, and even provide insights into your conversations on Meta's apps. He claimed that this AI is "built for the 3 billion people who already use Meta apps every day."

Muse Spark will power an updated version of Meta AI, available on the Meta AI app and website. It is set to expand to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Meta's smartglasses. It also features a new shopping mode that offers suggestions tailored to creators and brands.

With Llama models, Meta's strategy was to keep them open source. That is, the code for the models was available to the public. However, Muse Spark is closed source. However, the company says it hopes to open-source future versions of the model.

Currently, Muse Spark is available as a private API preview for select partners. Alexandr added that this was just the first step. He explained, "Even larger models are already in the works, and the infrastructure is being expanded accordingly."
