Imagine that we were to tell you that there is a lake in India which has floating islands in it, will you believe us? Although it may seem unbelievable to you, but the fact remains true as this very lake is located in the northeastern state of Manipur. This lake has been named Loktak Lake and it is the biggest freshwater lake in the northeastern region.

You must be surprised by the concept of floating islands; well, they do not move on their own, but this movement of islands is the unique characteristic of this lake. Now we come to know about how these lakes move.

Floating islands of Loktak Lake are known as Phumdis. These are solid pieces of land which consist of decayed soil, aquatic plants and other organic matter which float over the water surface. They appear to be fragile, but these islands have sufficient strength to build hutments of fishermen over them.

The large round floating islands spread out in the lake have become an attraction center for tourists all over the world. Along with these floating islands, the lake's beauty also amazes visitors.

Another unique feature of this lake is its floating national park. In the southeastern part of Loktak Lake lies the Keibul Lamjao National Park, the world's only floating national park. This national park spans approximately 40 square kilometers and rests on a large phumdi.

This national park is the natural habitat of the endangered Sangai deer, which are found only here. They are also called dancing deer because when they walk on the floating phumdis, they appear to be dancing. In addition, you can also see otters, some aquatic birds, and a variety of migratory birds.

Loktak Lake is also known for its biodiversity. A variety of plants and birds, both native and exotic, are found in this lake. Many migratory birds also visit here during the winter season, which is quite attractive for birdwatchers. Therefore, Loktak Lake is becoming increasingly popular among tourists, and people come from far and wide to see it. Staying in one of the floating homestays here is a truly exciting experience.
