The heat wave that will follow is predicted to have reached its peak with temperatures crossing 40°C in the Delhi NCR region during April. It will be challenging to travel during this period. The heat wave will not only make you feel exhausted but may even result in health problems. There is a possibility of you having a heatstroke if no precautions are taken. Let us examine the risks of traveling during a heat wave and the safety measures to take when traveling becomes unavoidable.

Do not travel long distances during heat waves unless there is an absolute necessity since extreme heat can cause dehydration, exhaustion, and heatstroke. People who are aged, pregnant, and young are particularly vulnerable.

What precautions should you take when traveling in a heatwave?

- Plan your travel early in the morning or late evening to avoid the midday sun, especially between 12 noon and 4 p.m., when the sun is strongest.

- Drink water regularly even if you are not thirsty. Stay hydrated. Carry water with you. Include electrolyte-rich drinks like ORS, lemonade, glucose or coconut water. Avoid caffeinated drinks and cold sodas as they can dehydrate you.

- Dress in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made of cotton or linen, which helps keep you cool by allowing air to reach your skin and absorbing sweat. Protect your eyes with sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, or an umbrella.

- Eat light foods such as watermelon, cucumber, and oranges that are high in water content. Avoid consuming roadside fruits or water, as they increase infection risk during heat.

- Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin. Carry a spray bottle with rose water or plain water to spritz your face and stay refreshed.

- For car travel, check the tires, coolant, and air conditioning before departure. Never leave children or pets unattended in parked cars, as internal temperatures can become lethally high.

- Be alert to your body's signals: if you experience dizziness, headaches, or severe weakness, stop and rest in a cool place, and consult a doctor if needed.
