It is well known that a healthy diet and specific nutrients benefit our eyesight. One such key carotenoid is zeaxanthin, but recent research has revealed surprising new insights. Scientists now suggest that this nutrient, vital for eye health, might also act as a strong defense against deadly diseases like cancer.
This groundbreaking discovery comes from a recent study by researchers at the University of Chicago, published in the journal Cell Reports Medicine. The findings offer new hope, showing how a common substance could help combat cancer by enhancing the immune system.
Jing Chen, the lead researcher, expressed both his delight and surprise at the results, noting, "We were pleasantly surprised to learn that zeaxanthin, known mainly for its role in eye health, actually enhances anti-tumor immunity."
The researchers discovered that zeaxanthin directly boosts the function of CD8+ T cells, crucial immune cells that identify and destroy cancer cells.
The study details how these T cells rely on the T-cell receptor to detect abnormal or cancerous cells. When these T cells encounter cancer, zeaxanthin helps strengthen and stabilize this receptor complex, amplifying cellular signals. This increases T-cell activity, cytokine production, and overall tumor-fighting ability.
