A teaser has been released by BYD, indicating that they will be bringing their first-ever plug-in hybrid into the Indian market soon. At the moment, BYD India has cars that run on electricity alone. While BYD has plug-in hybrid models elsewhere in the world, there is no mention of which one will make its way to India.

From the teaser, we learn that the model in question will have the BYD DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid EV powertrain. DM-i refers to Dual-Mode Intelligent. This primarily highlights the unique nature of a plug-in hybrid vehicle, where a conventional engine and a fully electric system work together.

BYD has not yet revealed which DM-i plug-in hybrid model it will be launching in India. However, a strong contender could be the Atto 2 DM-i. The possibility of launching the Atto 2 in India has been under consideration for some time. Testing of the Atto 2 was even spotted in India in August 2025.

In overseas markets, the Atto 2 is available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It is powered by a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a 7.8kWh or 18kWh battery pack. The 7.8kWh variant has a total WLTP range of 928 km, while the larger battery variant offers a total range of 998 km.
