After losing the toss, India batted first and after scoring 471 runs in the first innings, restricted England to a score of 465 and took a slight lead of 6 runs. In the second innings, India scored 364 runs and gave England a target of 371 runs to win the first Test, which England achieved by scoring 373 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in the second innings.
