The brutal killings of Hindus in Bangladesh have created animosity between India and Bangladesh. This further escalated when, as per the instructions of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Kolkata Knight Riders were compelled to release Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL team. This led to demands by the BCB that their T20 World Cup matches should now be organized in Sri Lanka instead of holding them in India. The response to this is yet to be seen from ICC.
In the midst of the intense situation between India and Bangladesh, former Bangladesh player Rajin Saleh remembered a very important incident in his playing career where he was aided by none other than Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. In an interview with TOI, Saleh said, "I was struggling for form in that series. I got out for zero in both innings of a Test match. I then got out for 14 and 0 in two ODIs, respectively.
I felt very dejected and frustrated. My morale was completely down. Before the third ODI, I knocked on Sachin's door, and he welcomed me. I told him about my poor form. He said, 'When you leave the field after getting out, leave that innings there and start afresh in the next match.'" Ganguly arrived at the same time and sat quietly to listen to what Sachin was saying.
Then Ganguly said, "Play like a hero, be a warrior." He told me to bat fearlessly at the crease. Those words really gave me a lot of courage. In the next match, I scored over 80 runs against India. I scored against Ajit Agarkar, Zaheer Khan, and Harbhajan Singh in that match.
Saleh said, "One is a god (Sachin) and the other is one of the best captains India has ever had (Ganguly). I really respect them. I'm grateful to have played against both of them. Sachin is the God of cricket, I've seen it on the field. Whenever he came to bat, the atmosphere became magical. It was just Sachin, Sachin, and nothing else. When he was batting, it was really difficult to concentrate."
Saleh, who played 24 Tests and 43 ODIs between 2003 and 2008, is currently working as the National High-Performance Batting Coach for Bangladesh Cricket. He further said, "I'm currently coaching a team in the BPL season. I also coach the Bangladesh senior team and work with the national high-performance setup."
I miss playing against India. I played the Under-19 World Cup with Kaif, Yuvraj, and many others, and I really miss facing India. I even asked Yuvraj for a bat on a few occasions. He took me to the dressing room and told me to take whatever bat I wanted. He has a big heart."
